Compassionate and Professional Care
Modern obstetrical care has moved mothers from the comfort and privacy of their homes to the clinical setting of the hospital. While offering improved care, the traditional hospital births often have left out the personal touches that make having a baby so memorable. Since the founding of Bellevue more than 75 years ago, our sincere goal is to make the birth of your baby an experience that will create wonderful memories for you and your family. We create a safe and personal environment of support for you as you welcome your new baby into the world.
Bellevue offers you a comfortable, homelike environment without sacrificing immediate access to medical technology. Mothers go through labor, give birth and bond with their newborns in one comfortable suite. Family members and friends are encouraged to participate and offer support in the birth experience. What makes a birth special can be different for each family and for that reason we encourage you to share your vision with us so we can personalize your experience.
Many Healthcare Professionals are here to help you.
Our Ob/Gyn Hospitalists are an experienced team of board certified obstetricians/gynecologists who are on-site 24/7 at Bellevue. These dedicated Ob/Gyn physicians are available at a moment's notice to deliver your baby if your doctor can't be present or to handle any emergencies that may arise.
Our Labor and Delivery Nurses are experts in their field. Many of them have acquired specialized certifications in Obstetric Nursing. All of our staff are CPR and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation) certified.
Neonatologists (physicians with additional training who specialize in newborn care) are on the premises or nearby on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergencies and insure continuous quality medical care for your baby. Respiratory Therapists are assigned to our nursery daily and available around-the-clock if needed.
Our dedicated staff of board certified Anesthesiologists is available 24/7. There is an anesthesiologist dedicated to the Labor and Delivery Unit who remains at the center 24 hours a day to administer regional anesthesia such as epidurals, and to respond to any emergencies that may arise.
Caring with Your Comfort in Mind
The Labor and Delivery staff at Bellevue Woman's Center encourages a variety of comfort measures for you to use during your labor. By educating yourself through regular prenatal care and childbirth classes and reading about your options, you will better understand your choices and be able to use the techniques that best suit your needs. Our staff of childbirth educators and registered nurses is available to assist you with your choices. Here are only some of the options and suggestions available to the laboring woman:
Movement During Labor
For a majority of women, walking and changing positions through the labor process is beneficial for emotional as well as physical comfort.
Water Therapy
Warm showers (with multiple shower head options and in-shower seating) are used to enhance relaxation and comfort. Many women have taken advantage of our relaxing hydrotherapy pool with both warm water and gentle jets.
Massage
Massage decreases tension, encourages relaxation and enhances the release of endorphins which create a greater sense of calm and well-being during labor.
Music Therapy
Music can enhance the mood and provide another pathway to relaxation. We have CD players and a collection of CDs for relaxation for you to use. You are invited to bring your favorite CDs from home.
Therapeutic Laughter
Sometimes a little entertainment is a helpful distraction during labor. We provide cable television in each room, for you and your guests.
Comforting Connections
Each laboring mother has a bedside telephone so that she can stay in touch with friends and family. In-coming calls can be held at your request. It's so nice to share the early newborn time to include family that's far away.
Personal Requests
Labor Ball
Many mothers have their own large gym ball that they use during pregnancy to ease their back pain. Used during labor, our different styles of labor balls can increase comfort and relaxation which allows labor to more easily progress.
Birthing Stool
This is actually a space-age version of an ancient way that laboring mothers around the world found comfort in labor. The specially designed stool is close to the ground so that it allows you to assume a squatting position for comfort without extra stress or tiring of your legs.
Pain Medication
A wide variety of medications are available for you if needed during labor. You and your provider will be able to work together to help determine what is best to suit your needs.
Analgesia and Anesthesia
Continuous spinal epidurals are available around the clock as needed or desired.
Helping Hands
Some families bring a professionally trained labor support person who stays with them through the whole labor process and assists with getting to know the new baby.
VBAC Delivery
For women interested in vaginal birth after c-section (VBAC), Bellevue offers the security of 24-hour Ob/Gyn Hospitalist coverage to assist in case of complications during a natural delivery.
Cesarean Section
Sometimes the unexpected happens and a surgical birth becomes safest for you or your baby. Or, if you have given birth by cesarean section before, you may plan another cesarean section. Our operating room for cesarean delivery is located a few steps from our Labor and Delivery Unit. Your support person is included in our plans for a safe birth of your baby. After you and your support person meet and hold your new baby while still in the operating room, the new family is taken to a private recovery room. Once settled, grandparents and siblings can visit and also meet the brand new baby. If you plan to breastfeed your baby, you may wish to start right after birth, in the recovery room.

Ob/Gyn Hospitalists provide 24-hour support
Ellis Medicine has introduced a first-of-its-kind program to the region that is improving the way care is delivered to pregnant women. The new Ob/Gyn Hospitalist program at Bellevue Woman's Center, which debuted in July 2010, brings an experienced team of board certified obstetricians/gynecologist on-site 24/7 at Bellevue. These dedicated Ob/Gyn physicians deliver babies if a patient's own physician can't be present and are available to handle any emergencies that may arise. These doctors join a team of board certified anesthesiologists in providing around the clock on-site coverage.
"Staffing Bellevue with hospital-based Ob/Gyn physicians, called hospitalists, serve to enhance patient safety, and improve the coordination and efficiency of care," explains Cindy Farrelly, director of Women's Services at Ellis Medicine. "It also provides peace of mind for our patients since a doctor is available, at a moment's notice, to step in to provide care."
Bellevue's dedicated Ob/Gyn physicians provide a number of services, including:
- Providing care in times of emergency prior to the arrival of a patient's own physician;
- Supporting the care of high-risk pregnancy patients;
- Delivering babies for patients who don't have an obstetrician.
"The Ob/Gyn Hospitalist program demonstrates Ellis Medicine's commitment to quality of care and innovation," says Ellis Medicine's Chief of Ob/Gyn Nicholas Kulbida, M.D., who is one of the Ob/Gyn hospitalists at Bellevue. "The program not only improves the quality of care for our patients, but also serves to continue the Bellevue tradition of leading the way in the overall care of women."
Ellis Medicine is contracting with OB Hospitalist Group, LLC, a national physician group specializing in the development, staffing and management of hospital-based Ob/Gyn practices. Hospitalist medicine is a growing trend in health care. In fact, the Society of Hospital Medicine estimates that more than 20,000 hospitalists are practicing in the United States and approximately half of America's hospitals employ hospitalists. Ellis has employed hospitalists for more than a decade.

Special Care Nursery - Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
As expectant parents, you may be in the process of choosing the hospital where your baby will be born. The availability of a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) could save precious moments in the care of your infant. It could even avoid the transferring of your baby to another facility. Bellevue's Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is one of only three in northeastern New York that provides these specialized services for infants over 30 weeks gestation in need of non-surgical medical intervention and care.
Bellevue's 15 bed NICU/Special Care Nursery features advanced technology and is staffed by board certified neonatologists who are available 24 hours a day. The NICU will be expanded as part of the modernization and renovation project at Bellevue, which is underway.
Our neonatologists work in conjunction with pediatricians, neonatal nurses, lactation consultants, respiratory therapists and social workers to provide the best care to pre-term and high-risk newborns. We pay particular attention to every detail, from lighting and temperature to medical equipment, so that we can provide the best environment for sick and premature infants. The extra-special aspect of Bellevue's NICU/Special Care Nursery is the dedicated team of nurses who attend to the every need of the babies in our care, day and night.
The NICU/Special Care Nursery is located on the Upper Level of Bellevue Woman's Center. Parents and siblings are welcome to visit their baby at almost any time. As an infant's condition improves, parents are encouraged to touch, hold and feed their baby. At Bellevue, we want to make the transition of your baby's discharge as easy as possible. We have a dedicated "Family Room" which allows parents to spend the night with their baby and care for him or her, under the guidance of our specially trained nursery staff, prior to going home.
