Patient Safety and Quality of Care

Ellis Hospital strives, above all else, to ensure the safety of its patients and to deliver the highest quality of care. Ellis' commitment to quality and patient safety has been a long standing effort that dates back to well before the issue's recent emergence into the public spotlight.

Some of the hospital's newest quality and patient safety initiatives include: the adoption of a Patient Safety Plan that is updated yearly and embraces national standards for safety; the restructuring of the Quality Committee and Patient Safety Committee to include members of the hospital board, administration and high level management; the creation of a Patient Safety Officer position; and the implementation of a program called Patient Safety Leadership WalkRounds.

The hospital's efforts include a thorough evaluation of the ways in which health care is delivered, and a large amount of education and awareness surrounding identified areas of concern. Once quality or patient safety issues are identified, whether through WalkRounds or through other channels, the Patient Safety or Quality Committee takes immediate steps to address, resolve, and track the issues.

Ellis Hospital's quality and patient safety policies and procedures have been so successful, that the hospital has been recognized by two national health care conferences - the National Patient Safety Foundation Congress (May 2004) and the National Association for Healthcare Quality (Sept. 2004).

"The Board of Trustees, the administration, medical leadership, and staff are united in our common goal to reduce unnecessary medical errors." -- Dominick Bizzaro, Ellis Hospital Quality Committee Chairman
